Foreclosure Pets Make A Mockery Of Human Values
Posted on August 26th, 2008 in Foreclosure |Abandoned foreclosure pets are making a mockery of tall talk on human values. It poses the question about who is the beast and who is not. In the Valley the increasing number of foreclosed units have created this new man-made problem. It is about the four-legged furry friends of man that share the planet with the bipeds. The number of abandoned pets rises with the number of foreclosures.
Cats and dogs are among the worst sufferers. Karen Layne of Las Vegas Valley Humane Society says, “It’s scary” because there does not seem to be any end in sight. The society is coming across more and more abandoned pets that, having been domesticated cannot survive on their own. The society is receiving innumerable calls from people being forced to leave their homes begging their pets to be taken in.
Layne cannot imagine how anyone can leave their pets behind. It is like a family member. How can one leave behind the child or the elderly relative? Some foreclosure victims do not have the either the time or the inclination to call shelters. They leave behind their pets in horrendous conditions – chained or locked without food or water. The hapless creatures die a slow death bringing down a curse on humanity.
The factors behind this abnormal human behaviour are not far to see – increasing gas and fuel prices causing big dents in the pockets that ultimately lead to foreclosures. In such a scenario the number of abandoned pets have increased but sadly less people are coming forward to adopt them. The people just do not have the money.
Cats and kittens are at the worst receiving end – thanks to foreclosures. In the previous year 21,000 had to be euthanized because of no other alternative. Cats have less chance than dogs to be adopted. Dogs have 50% chance of being taken in. Layne tries to drive home the fact that the people must be more responsible. While it is understandable that they may not be able to take their animals with them, they must make alternative arrangements and not leave them to die slow horrific deaths.
Latest reports show that Nevada is leading in foreclosures and that means a likely increase in number of abandoned pets in this region. The Humane society appeals to humans to at least leave the animals at shelters or arrange for their neutering or spaying. The Humane Society needs the help of human beings.
